Xaura supports slower fashion, the kind created through ethical hand made products which represents a way of living and means of livelihood for some communities. We want to ensure that we support and give credit to them. For this reason, we have a close relationship with our factories who operate on a small-scale production to support small businesses.

As they are a smaller factory they are not able to provide certificates by third-party controller due to the high cost of such audits. This does not mean that they do not strive to perform best practices, and together we cooperate to achieve fair working conditions. We have signed an agreement with our factories to state that there is fair and safe labour, health, and fair wages. We have assessed their environmental impact report thoroughly, and visit our factories regularly to maintain trust and transparency. While we may not be perfect, we strive to improve together.

We are also aware of the environmental issues of fast fashion and are aiming to be a more sustainable brand by making limited, seasonless pieces that are designed keeping in mind versatility so that every piece can be worn with each other to get the maximum usage out of the garments.

We try and reduce our waste by recycling fabric scraps into bags/hang tags/bookmarks and forever thinking of creative ways to reduce the impact on the environment. Working with only 100% sustainable fabrics is what we aim to do in the near future.

Hand Embroidery is known as the crafts of the two hands.

Embroidery in India became popular in the 16th century with each state having their own unique method of embroidery which show the rich, vibrant and traditional crafts that have been practiced and developed over many centuries.

The process of hand embroidery used in Xaura clothing is called Aari embroidery which uses the finest pen like needle to pierced holes along the lines of the design to create intricate patterns. Firstly, the fabric is tied to two sides of a wooden frame (khaat) using thick cords and is stretched out. Then the pattern of embroidery is copied and transferred on a tracing paper which is placed on the fabric (Chapaayi) and rubbed with a white paste of chalk, making the design appear on the fabric. The threads of silk are then embroidered on the fabric with a lot of patience and precision.

The art of hand block printing technique was created somewhere as early as 3000 BC and flourished in India around 12th century in the era of Maharajas (royalty’s). The designs are meticulously carved by skilled craftsmen on the wooden block which has to be soaked in oil for around a fortnight to soften the fine particles in the timber. The block also has a handle which is dipped in the colour and block pressed down on the fabric simultaneously to form repeat patterns and is quite transcending to watch. The blocks vary from 1 – 3 for 1 pattern depending on the colours required. The fabric is then dried and then steamed and washed and sun dried and ironed to prepare for stitching. Such a unique and beautiful technique.

Behind the Brand

Xaura was started with an intention to showcase my heritage crafts on timeless garments that allows women to express their true self. Each piece has its own unique story from the hand woven fabrics, to hand dyes used.

Growing up I was not able to fit in due to my cultural difference background. Through creating and designing I was able to integrate both sides of my upbringing, my Indian heritage and Western culture, which has given me an avenue to express my own true self.

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with artisans of India, which in turn supports them in keeping their unique craft alive. I want to be able to make women feel good about themselves and to encourage them to showcase their individuality through Xaura.
